Norban – Malmö
In the industrial heart of Malmö’s old harbor Nyhamnen, the historic Saltimporten building now holds the the vibrant new headquarters for real estate firm Norban. Viktor Erlandsson Studio were asked to redesign the space, once a utilitarian salt warehouse, to become a sophisticated office that embraces its industrial roots while fostering a modern work environment.
Flanking the heart of the office, two expansive open areas with towering windows and soaring ceilings establish an atmosphere of boundless potential, serving as the main workspaces. These vibrant zones of activity are divided by a lofted middle section, offering intimate meeting rooms and focused workspaces. This architectural arrangement enhances the sense of community in the larger areas, while still providing seclusion for moments requiring quiet and concentration.
The interior highlights the fusion of raw industrial features with refined design touches. The interplay between the exposed ventilation ducts and galvanized steel staircase with the soft textiles and nuanced color scheme creates a workspace that is both playful and polished, balancing bold colors with the industrial charm of the structure.
The space is defined by robust concrete beams – a nod to the building’s storied past. A distinctive blue-green hue, inspired by the chemical reaction of salt on untreated concrete, adorns the thick ceiling beams, reconnecting the renovated space with its historical narrative. The result is an elegant, inviting office that honors its heritage while looking boldly forward.
